Able: activity-based locomotor exercise program

If you are living with paralysis or a neurological condition, the ABLE: Activity-Based Locomotor Exercise Program, may help you. ABLE is based on the most up-to-date scientific and clinical evidence. It’s designed to speed up recovery after a spinal cord injury. The objective is to help your brain and spinal cord relearn motor patterns associated with standing and walking. The ultimate goal is to increase your mobility and improve your health.

What it is

The ABLE program delivers a complete fitness and wellness program that incorporates locomotor training, neuromuscular electrical stimulation (NMES) and guided fitness activities to encourage muscles and movement below the level of injury.

The ABLE Program is customized to your individual goals following a thorough functional and physiological assessment.

Courage Kenny Rehabilitation Institute takes a holistic mind-body approach to rehabilitation and lifelong wellness. Most ABLE Program participants experience improvements in health, fitness, strength and quality of life.

We are Minnesota's only NeuroRecovery Network facility

Courage Kenny Rehabilitation Institute’s ABLE program is one of only six community fitness and wellness facilities in the entire nation—and the only one in Minnesota—that is part of the Christopher and Dana Reeve Foundation NeuroRecovery Network (NRN).

NRN is leading research on spinal cord injury. Dr. Susan Harkema, head of NRN, is also doing epidural stimulation research.

ABLE staff training is through national leaders in spinal cord injury. Continued learning is through the annual national summit.
